چکیده

In this paper we introduce a new dynamic importance sampling propagation algorithm for Bayesian networks. Importance sampling is based on using an auxiliary sampling distribution from which a set of configurations of the variables in the network is drawn, and the performance of the algorithm depends on the variance of the weights associated with the simulated configurations. The basic idea of dynamic importance sampling is to use the simulation of a configuration to modify the sampling distribution in order to improve its quality and so reducing the variance of the future weights. The paper shows that this can be achieved with a low computational effort. The experiments carried out show that the final results can be very good even in the case that the initial sampling distribution is far away from the optimum. 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Dynamic importance sampling in Bayesian networks using factorisation of probability trees

Factorisation of probability trees is a useful tool for inference in Bayesian networks. Probabilistic potentials some of whose parts are proportional can be decomposed as a product of smaller trees. Some algorithms, like lazy propagation, can take advantage of this fact. Also, the factorisation can be used as a tool for approximating inference, if the decomposition is carried out even if the pr...

Local Importance Sampling in Multiply Sectioned Bayesian Networks

The multiply sectioned Bayesian network (MSBN) is a well-studied model for probability reasoning in a multiagent setting. Exact inference, however, becomes difficult as the problem domain grows larger and more complex. We address this issue by integrating approximation techniques with the MSBN Linked Junction Tree Forest (LJF) framework. In particular, we investigate the application of importan...

Cost Analysis of Acceptance Sampling Models Using Dynamic Programming and Bayesian Inference Considering Inspection Errors

Acceptance Sampling models have been widely applied in companies for the inspection and testing the raw material as well as the final products. A number of lots of the items are produced in a day in the industries so it may be impossible to inspect/test each item in a lot. The acceptance sampling models only provide the guarantee for the producer and consumer that the items in the lots are acco...

Theoretical analysis and practical insights on importance sampling in Bayesian networks

The AIS-BN algorithm [2] is a successful importance sampling-based algorithm for Bayesian networks that relies on two heuristic methods to obtain an initial importance function: 2-cutoff , replacing small probabilities in the conditional probability tables by a larger 2, and setting the probability distributions of the parents of evidence nodes to uniform. However, why the simple heuristics are...

Use of a Quantum Computer to do Importance and Metropolis-Hastings Sampling of a Classical Bayesian Network

Importance sampling and Metropolis-Hastings sampling (of which Gibbs sampling is a special case) are two methods commonly used to sample multi-variate probability distributions (that is, Bayesian networks). Heretofore, the sampling of Bayesian networks has been done on a conventional “classical computer”. In this paper, we propose methods for doing importance sampling and Metropolis-Hastings sa...
